Engaging the Reader's Senses
If you are telling stories in your articles, you can make your stories more interesting and memorable by engaging the reader's senses.
When you tap into the reader's imagination to engage their senses, you usually end up evoking emotion too. This is particularly true and similar to when you engage the sense of smell, which linked to emotion.
Indeed, just try it out for yourself and see. Think of a particular smell from your life, like the smell of your first car or the smell of popcorn at the movie theater.
Think of a smell that stays with you, as if what the beach smelled like when you went on your favorite vacation or think of the way your grandmother's house smelled when you were a child.
Did you see what happened? Just thinking about a particular smell evoked emotion. For example, the smell of popcorn at a movie theater likely brings back a happy feeling as you recall going to see a movie with friends or family.
If your last time at the beach was a pleasant one, just thinking about its smells likewise brought back pleasant emotions.
Of course, people's sensory experiences are not limited to their noses. That is why you need to engage all their senses. By creating this total sensory experience, you can get your reader to forget about the outside world for a minute or two and that is exactly the kind of total attention you need when you are using content marketing to build relationships, build your list and sell products.
The above reasons are not the only reason for engaging the reader's senses. Remember how last time you learned that if you can get a prospect to imagine receiving the benefits of a product, you are well on your way to closing the sale?
You can make this imagination trick even more powerful by engaging all the reader's senses.
For example, let us say you are selling a deep-cleaning steam vacuum as an alternative to pricey professional cleaning. Moreover, let us suppose you are writing a pre-sell article. You should not limit yourself to saying things, "Imagine your joy when your carpets are finally clean!"
Instead, you might engage the person's senses by saying things like: "Imagine walking into your living room, drawing in a deep breath, and smelling a clean, fresh scent.
That is your carpet... "
Do you see how that works?
Instead of directly asking someone to imagine their joy, you get them to imagine smelling a clean carpet. In addition, if you can get them to do that, you can bet they will also imagine how they will feel when they smell the fresh scent.
Now remember, you should engage all senses whenever possible. That includes:
Sight ("The sky lit up all orange, red and yellow as the sun rose... ")Hearing ("The fireworks sounded like cannon fire...
