Why It Is Important to Be Invisible On the Internet

It is important be as invisible on the Internet as possible because there are many people on the internet who want to use a person for their own agenda. This may seem like a conspiracy theory, however, that would be a denial of the plain truth. There are many people on the Internet who only use the Internet for their own personal gain.

These people exist on the Internet because they like making fun of people or they want an easy way to make money. Therefore, the people in the latter half of that category will try to steal the identity of users online. This has become much simpler since the social media programs have convinced everyone that they should release a lot of sensitive information about themselves on the social systems.

The truth is that the social network can easily get such information as birthdays, place of birth, and even the date that a couple was married. In the past this information would have been hidden and most people would not have given it freely. However, on the social networks, this is a common practice. One of the things that the social media networks did well is convince the populace that it was standing operating procedures for the social networks to have this information up front.

A lot of the financial experts have correctly surmised that in the past this type of information was relegated towards banks and financial institutions. However, the new world has made this knowledge common knowledge. Therefore, this information is no longer highly sensitive. However, an identity thief can easily use this information to steal someone's identity. Therefore, even though this information is commonplace on the social networks, it still is dangerous for people to have if the user does not know them personally.

Therefore, a person must be very careful about releasing this information on the internet because the social networks do not protect this information. In fact, it is not a stretch to say that the social networks let everyone (friends, family, and enemies) view this information all the same. There are even times when users have set this information to private and it was not really private because the information is still passed to web applications.

Privacy on the social networks may not be as private as people think it is. Privacy is far less like old privacy and more like invisible privacy. This means that the privacy that people are getting on most social networks is not what people think it is. It is merely a façade and not what the user is thinking it is.

Therefore, the only solution to this problem is to carefully manage a social profile with privacy in mind. A person must select (at every post and update) if they want the social media network to know this fact about them. If a person does this well, then they will experience the social privacy that they want without the worry of wondering what information is actually being released about them by the social network.
